Dear DC,

Allen Scott is not a mainstream hero. You guys suck, both for using a character's sexuality as a marketing gimmick (seriously, if it didn't work for Marvel in the 90s, what makes you think it would work now?), and for copping out by using second-stringer for your "big reveal." Try taking a chance every now and then; you might be surprised.

No love,

I had to look him up. Though by and large (there are exceptions, obviously) I stopped paying any attention to the wacky hijinx that DC propagates to generate sales nowadays. (Batman shoots Darkseid. Really? That's the best they got?)
Not that Marvel's any better.
You know, I could use a trade in for "old and jaded."

There's good stuff on both: the new Defenders is pretty good so far and The Adventures of Jaime and Paco (also known as Blue Beetle) shows signs of surviving the DC Reboot more or less intact, although it's still young. Aquaman is being written by Geoff Johns, who did some amazing things with Green Lantern, and I'm liking it a lot. I have noticed a tendency with the New 52 is that, when a series is sketchy on its survivability, they put Rob Liefield on it (Hawk & Dove, Deathstroke, and at least one other book are being done by Liefield, and selling for shit. Gee, I wonder why?)

Really? I had to drop Blue Beetle, since they're retelling the same story they just told over the last four years, but they've sucked all of the charm and interesting character beats right the hell out of it in favor of cliches and stereotypes.

I liked the first issues of Earth-2 and World's Finest.

Frankly, I have no problem with Alan being the one coming out of the closet; yeah, it's a little cheap, but frankly, up until Kyle came along, he was my favorite GL.

Of course, my list of favorite GLs kind of goes like this:

1. Kyle Rayner
2. Alan Scott
3. John Stewart
4. David Kim as an alternate-timeline GL in Trinity
5. Guy Gardner (post-brain damage recovery)
6. Jack T. Chance
7. Mogo

[... roughly seven thousand names later ...]

7,200. Guy Gardner (with brain damage)
7,201. Tangent Comics Green Lantern
7,202. Daffy Duck
7,203. Hal Fucking Jordan

Alan Scott being gay in nuDC was James Robinson's idea. Didio decided to use it to steal a lead on Marvel.

I'm not sure which outing at Marvel in the 90s was a marketing gimmick. If you mean Northstar, um, no, Marvel didn't quite know how to handle the press. Their response to everyone at the time was "no comment." They couldn't even claim to have fired Scott Lobdell for that story. He turned in Northstar vs Major Mapleleaf as his last issue when he decided it was past time for Jean-Paul to come out.

Ah, so it's Didio's fault. Good; more reasons to hate him.
